The Three Levels of EV Charging<\/h4>\n

There are three levels of EV charging, so let\u2019s start with the simplest one. Appropriately, it\u2019s called Level 1, and literally, anyone can do it.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a remarkable statement, but it\u2019s true. All you have to know how to do is plug your vehicle\u2019s electric battery into a standard 120V outfit and wait for the charge to take place.<\/p>\n

The bad news is that you\u2019ll be waiting for a while. If you\u2019ve run your battery down to the point where you can\u2019t risk driving, you\u2019ll have to wait more than a day for a full charge.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take the example of a basic electric vehicle like a Chevy Bolt. With these cars, it will take you 40 hours to do a full charge, and each hour will add 5 miles to the driving range of your vehicle.<\/p>\n

While you\u2019re waiting, remember that it\u2019s not a good idea to run your battery down too low all the time. Forgetting to charge your EV battery is one thing, and so is the occasional need to push your vehicle to the limits of its driving range.<\/p>\n

If you do it constantly, though, you run the risk of damaging your battery and batteries are one of the most expensive parts of an electronic vehicle.<\/p>\n

Level 2 Charging<\/h4>\n

Now let\u2019s talk about a Level 2 charge. Choosing Level 2 will save you a lot of time\u2014you can expect a full charge in about 9 hours, which is one reason so many people choose Level 2 charging as part of their routine for daily commuting.
\nUsing a regular wall outlet is not going to cut it. The voltage required to do a Level 2 charge is 220\/240V, which means you\u2019ll need the same kind of heavy-duty outlet you may have already installed for your clothes dryer.<\/p>\n

The faster performance usually makes it worth installing this kind of outlet. You\u2019ll be adding about 6 kW of electrical power per charging hour, and each hour will add 25 miles to your vehicle\u2019s driving range.<\/p>\n

Level 3 Vehicle Charging Station<\/h4>\n

Now let\u2019s talk about really fast charging. That\u2019s what Level 3 is all about, and the chargers that provide this speed are also known as DC chargers or DCFC chargers.<\/p>\n

They can charge your typical EV in a little over an hour, and they operate at a voltage level of 40V while charging your EV at a rate of 50-60 kV per hour.<\/p>\n

The downside of Level 3 is cost. The typical price for a Level 3 charge that will give you 200 miles of range is about $30, so you\u2019ll need to factor that amount into your daily or weekly budget, especially if you\u2019re commuting a significant distance.<\/p>\n

You may want to consider using Level 3 as a top-off option while relying on your 128-installed Level 2 charger to help save some money.

At this point, you probably want to know about having a Level 3 charger installed, but in most cases, it\u2019s simply not a practical option as a home install.
